چکیده

we observed that in several ascaris ova a small larva was wriggling within the shell. This was also noted by our colleagues Dr. Bag and D1'Dutt and several students. As we watched, an area of the shell of one ovum gave way?opening up as if on hinges and the larva wriggled out. As soon as the larva came out it died. After a couple of minutes the whole egg-shell crumbled. In several other smears of the specimen larv# were seen, apparently dead, half in and half out of the shell. We have not seen this phenomenon with ascaris ova before. My (A. S.) experience in examination of preserved faeces is however very limited. The specimen was preserved by formalin method three weeks previously. (Fseces diluted with water, mixed with equal quantity of hot 10 per cent formalin? allowed to stand for a few hours, supernatant fluid decanted off and replaced by 5 per cent formalin, and kept in stoppered bottles.) Before giving the specimen to the class the supernatant formalin solution was decanted off and replaced by normal saline.

The difficulty caused by the fragility of the ova of Ascaris lumbricoides.

The standard textbooks of clinical pathology and of laboratory technique describe the typical ova of Ascaris lunibricoides as being easily recognized, but all refer to the difficulty in recognizing certain of the ova. The following observation may explain why it is sometimes so difficult to recognize them. When searching for these ova it is convenient to work with relatively thick faecal emulsi...

Occurrence and fate of Ascaris lumbricoides ova in biosolids in Victoria, Australia: a human health risk assessment of biosolids storage periods.

Reuse of sewage biosolids in Victoria, Australia, typically involves mesophilic anaerobic digestion followed by air-drying and long-term storage to ensure removal of ova of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) such as Ascaris lumbricoides. Long-term storage degrades the biosolids' agronomic quality due to the loss of key plant nutrients and takes up large areas of storage space. The impact of varyi...

Development of a Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Diagnosis of Ascaris lumbricoides in Fecal Samples

Ascaris lumbricoides is a nematode parasite that causes the common tropical infection ascariasis in humans. It is also considered among the neglected tropical diseases. Diagnosis relies mainly on microscopy-based methods which are laborious, are limited by low sensitivity, and require high expertise. We have developed a loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for diagnosis of ascariasis i...

Prevalence of helminth ova in soil samples from public places in Shiraz.

To determine the prevalence of helminth eggs in public places and children's playgrounds, 112 soil samples were collected in 26 sites in Shiraz, southern Islamic Republic of Iran, during September 2002-September 2003. Toxocara cati ova were found in 7 (6.3%) samples, 2 had Ascaris lumbricoides ova, 3 had larvae morphologically similar to Strongyloides stercoralis. Coccidia oocysts were also obs...
